Did You Know?
The name "turtle" for these treats comes from their resemblance to the shape of a turtle, with the pecan mimicking the shell. Combining pretzels with caramel and chocolate creates a perfect harmony of flavors and textures, making them a beloved snack for all ages!
Yield
Makes about 24 Pretzel Turtles
Ingredients
- 24 mini pretzels
- 24 soft caramel candies (like Werther’s or Kraft Caramels)
- 24 pecan halves
- 1 cup semisweet or milk chocolate chips (or dark chocolate for a richer flavor)
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional, for smoother chocolate)
- Sea salt (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup.
Step 2: Assemble the Pretzels and Caramels
Arrange the mini pretzels in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Place one caramel candy on top of each pretzel.
Step 3: Soften the Caramel
Bake the pretzels and caramels in the oven for 3–4 minutes, just until the caramels soften (don’t let them melt completely).
Step 4: Press on the Pecans
Remove the tray from the oven and immediately press a pecan half onto each caramel, gently flattening it.
Step 5: Melt the Chocolate
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips with the coconut oil in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and glossy.
Step 6: Drizzle or Coat
Using a spoon, drizzle melted chocolate over each pretzel turtle. Alternatively, you can dip the bottom half of each pretzel into the melted chocolate for a thicker coating.
Step 7: Add Sea Salt (Optional)
Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the chocolate while it’s still wet for an added layer of flavor.
Step 8: Let Them Set
Allow the pretzel turtles to cool at room temperature or place them in the fridge for 15–20 minutes to set the chocolate.
Step 9: Serve or Store
Transfer the cooled pretzel turtles to an airtight container. They can be stored at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
