Easy Beans and Bacon Recipe

This quick and flavorful recipe combines tender canned beans with smoky bacon and a hint of maple sweetness for a satisfying side or main dish. Perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings!

Yield
Serves 4–6

Ingredients

  • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cans (15 oz each) white beans or pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Bacon
In a large skillet or saucepan, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel-lined plate. Leave about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease in the pan.

Step 2: Sauté the Onion and Garlic
Add the diced onion to the pan and sauté in the bacon grease over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3: Add the Beans and Sauce
Reduce the heat to low. Add the drained beans to the skillet and stir to combine.

In a small bowl, mix together the maple syrup, ketchup, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Pour the sauce over the beans and stir to coat evenly.

Step 4: Simmer
Simmer the beans and sauce mixture on low heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.

Step 5: Add the Bacon
Stir the cooked bacon into the beans just before serving.

Step 6: Serve and Garnish
Transfer the beans and bacon to a serving dish and garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

How It Tastes
Sweet, smoky, and savory, with the perfect balance of tender beans and crispy bacon. The maple syrup adds a subtle caramelized sweetness, while the smoky paprika enhances the bacon's richness.

Kitchen Tips

  • Bean Options: Swap white beans or pinto beans with kidney beans, black beans, or navy beans for variety.
  • Smoky Flavor: Add a dash of liquid smoke for extra depth.
  • Make It Spicy: Add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or hot sauce for a little heat.
  • Leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop.

Enjoy this easy and hearty dish with cornbread, over rice, or as a flavorful side to grilled meats!
