Ingredients for Vanilla Buttercream
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened (room temperature)
4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt


Ingredients for Chocolate Buttercream
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened (room temperature)
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1/2 cup cocoa powder, sifted
2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt


Instructions
Step 1: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with a mixer on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until creamy and light in color.

Step 2: For vanilla buttercream, gradually add powdered sugar one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. For chocolate buttercream, sift the cocoa powder with the powdered sugar, then add the mixture one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.

Step 3: Mix in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk and beat on medium-high speed until the frosting is light and fluffy. If the frosting is too thick, add an extra tablespoon of cream. If it’s too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.

Step 4: Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. Alternatively, store the frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Rewhip before using.
