Ingredients
For the Christmas Crack:
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans, walnuts (optional)
- Flaky Sea salt (optional, for a salty kick) : For the best results, use a flaky sea salt like Maldon Sea Salt or a similar brand. Sprinkle it lightly on top of the melted chocolate before it sets.
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a 9x13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
Step 2: Arrange the Crackers
Lay the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire surface. Set aside.
Step 3: Make the Toffee
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter and brown sugar.
- Stir continuously until the butter is melted and the mixture begins to boil.
- Once boiling, let it bubble for 3 minutes without stirring. The mixture should turn a golden-brown color.
Step 4: Pour and Bake
- Carefully pour the hot toffee over the saltine crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula to cover all the crackers.
- Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 minutes, until the toffee is bubbly.
Step 5: Add the Chocolate
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
- Let the chocolate sit for 2-3 minutes to melt, then use a spatula to spread it evenly over the toffee layer.
Step 6: Add Toppings
- Sprinkle chopped pecans, walnuts, and a light dusting of sea salt over the melted chocolate.
- Let the Christmas Crack cool to room temperature, then place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to set completely.
Step 7: Break into Pieces
Once fully set, lift the parchment or foil out of the pan and break the Christmas Crack into pieces.

- Customize Toppings: Try crushed candy canes, chopped pretzels, or shredded coconut for different flavors.
- Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week at room temperature or in the fridge for 2 weeks.
- Freezing: This treat freezes well. Store in a sealed container for up to 2 months.
- Use Good Quality Chocolate: For the best results, use high-quality chocolate chips or bars.
- Line the Pan: Use parchment or foil to make cleanup easy and ensure the toffee doesn’t stick.
