Share
"A classic Italian-inspired sandwich with fresh mozzarella, juicy tomatoes, aromatic basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze, toasted to perfection."
Yield
Makes 2 sandwiches
Ingredients
For the Panini:
- 4 slices sourdough or ciabatta bread
- 4 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 8–10 fresh basil leaves
- 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Optional Garnish:
- Sprinkle of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Assemble the Sandwich
- Lay out two slices of bread and layer each with fresh mozzarella slices, tomato slices, and basil leaves.
- Drizzle 1 tablespoon of balsamic glaze over the fillings for each sandwich.
- Sprinkle lightly with sea salt and black pepper, if desired.
- Top with the second slice of bread to form the sandwich.
Step 2: Toast the Panini
- With a Panini Maker: Preheat the panini maker. Brush the outside of the bread with olive oil, place the sandwich in the panini press, and toast until the bread is golden and crisp, and the cheese is melted (about 3–5 minutes).
- Without a Panini Maker (Grilled Method): Heat a skillet over medium heat. Brush the outside of the bread with olive oil and place the sandwich in the skillet. Press down with a heavy pan or spatula to mimic the panini press. Cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
Step 3: Serve
- Slice each sandwich in half and serve immediately. Add extra balsamic glaze drizzled over the top for a finishing touch if desired.
Kitchen Tips
- Bread Choice: Ciabatta, sourdough, or focaccia work best for this sandwich as they toast well and hold the fillings nicely.
- Balsamic Glaze Substitute: If you don’t have balsamic glaze, simmer balsamic vinegar with a touch of honey until thickened.
- Add Protein: For an extra boost, add thinly sliced grilled chicken or prosciutto.
